Asheville’s favorite country-rock band, Wednesday, took over The Orange Peel this past Friday and Saturday for two nights of the best music North Carolina has to offer. Opening for Wednesday on Friday were Asheville bands Space Heater and Hiding Places. Then on Saturday we had the pleasure of seeing Durham bands Fust and Truth Club get the crowd rowdy before Wednesday.
Wednesday’s next album is waiting to be released, so they decided these shows would serve as a farewell to their 2023 record, Rat Saw God. On Saturday the band made their peace with the album by playing all but three songs, while weaving in a few unreleased songs from their anticipated release.
This was not my first time seeing Wednesday so I was excited to see them post on their socials that they would be playing some “deep cuts.” Before heading out for the show Saturday night I glanced at the setlist from the night before and was sad to see “She’s Acting Single,” a Gary Stewart song I’ve seen them cover before, on the list. They also mentioned they wouldn’t be doing much double-dipping across the sets for the people that went both nights, so my sadness was quickly buried by the possibilities of what else could be on the setlist.
They were not lying when they said deep cuts. One of my favorites was "Three Sisters" from Twin Plagues, which they played for the second time ever live since its release in 2021. Other songs that the band rarely plays that were featured Saturday night were"Maura" and "November" from I Was Trying to Describe You to Someone and “Women Without Whiskey,” a Drive-By Truckers song that’s on their 2022 cover album Mowing the Leaves Instead of Piling ‘em Up.
I couldn’t have put together a better setlist or a better lineup for Saturday night myself. This wasn’t my first time seeing any of the three bands live, but it was definitely my favorite!
